National Home Caregivers Month
Post by: Ask The Director

Home caregivers are family members that are taking care of a loved one or family in the home rather than in a long-term care facility. Home Caregivers are responsible for the health, well-being and care of the person that is in their care. There are a myriad of factors that can result in a person choosing to be taken care of at home rather than at a long-term care facility and the reasons can be deeply personal for most families. Here are some helpful tips for Home Caregivers and those supporting them.

Oftentimes, people choose care at home rather than a nursing home for the sake of keeping their loved one close to home. But remaining in the home doesn't mean a lack of professional care. Nurses can be brought in during the day for physical therapy, occupational therapy and more to help with the tasks that must be taken care of by a trained professional. Additionally, home care professionals can be hired to help watch your loved one during the day: oftentimes they can help perform household tasks, make sure your loved one is fed and ensure that basic needs are met while you work during the day. These options can be expensive but certain insurance providers, church groups and other resources are available to help with some of the financial pressures that level of care can bring with it.

Consider seeing a therapist as an individual or as a family. Taking care of a loved one can be emotionally taxing especially if they are grappling with a chronic illness. It is important to take care of your emotional wellbeing and mental health, too. You can only take care of others if you take care of yourself.

Use your spare time as wisely as you can. Maintaining a routine can be difficult but vitally important when you are acting as the caregiver to a sick loved one. Use the time that you do have to see friends, take care of yourself, exercise or simply do a few of the things you enjoy doing in your spare time.

We'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you and our genuine support to all of the Home Caregivers in our community. Your dedication does not go unnoticed.
