Do I still have to go to a funeral home to make arrangements during COVID-19?

The coronavirus is forcing us to make alterations to the way we do many things, including how we make funeral arrangements.

The coronavirus is forcing us to make alterations to the way we do many things, including how we make funeral arrangements.

When a loved one passes, it’s common practice to go to the funeral home to make arrangements. However, with current travel restrictions in place this may not be possible. It is also likely that if you are following social distancing you may wish to limit your contact with others.

Funeral homes are very fortunate in that they can adapt their practices to our current situation. In many cases you do not need to go to the funeral home to make arrangements. Most funeral arrangements can be done over the phone or online. Funeral directors are very experienced in what questions to ask and what information they need to gather. They will easily be able to get your preferences and choices over the phone, through email or via a video chat. Many funeral homes have digital product catalogues to help choose things like caskets or urns. This allows you to make decisions in the privacy of your own home.

If you do wish to go to the funeral home to make arrangements, it is likely this will be an available option. However, the funeral home will limit the number of people who can attend the meeting. They may also limit the meeting to immediate family only.

One thing to keep in mind is that you will, most likely, have to go to the funeral home in person to sign the final contract and make a payment. Fortunately, this can be done quickly and with minimal contact.

If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to your funeral director. They will be able to explain their procedures and what they are doing to keep families safe during this time.
