Valentine’s Day is a day celebrating the important relationships in your life. However, it can also bring up memories that trigger feelings of grief for those that have lost a special loved one.

One thing to keep in mind is that, while it can be easy to isolate yourself when you feel sad, prolonged isolation may prevent you from being able to work through your grief. While some time for reflection can be good, it is important that you find a healthy balance. Find ways to spend time with those who can support you.

Here are some ways to cope with grief and loss this Valentine’s Day.

1)    Schedule a phone call or virtual chat. If you can’t spend time with friends or family in person, reach out to schedule some time either on the phone or through video chat. You can even pick an activity to do together such as baking, cooking, or a craft.

2)    Talk to a professional or support group. It can also be helpful to attend a therapy session or support group session. This gives you time to talk with others who are going through similar experiences.

3)    Go to the cemetery. This may not be the best choice for everyone, but for some, it may be therapeutic to visit your loved one’s grave on Valentine’s Day. Read a poem or letter, leave flowers or simply sit and reflect.

4)    Treat yourself. If you need an excuse to indulge in a little self-care, Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity. Brighten your home with flowers, order take out from your favorite restaurant or take a day trip to your favorite spot.

5)    Continue as usual. There is no reason why you need to do anything special at all on Valentine’s Day if you don’t feel like it.

If you are supporting someone who has lost a special loved one, remember that you can reach out to them as well. Set up a phone call or visit and let them know you are thinking about them.

Valentine’s Day will never be quite the same without your loved one, but whatever you do, be kind to yourself and know that your feelings of sadness are normal. And don’t hesitate to reach out to others if you need some extra support.
