When it comes to planning a military funeral, whether for yourself or a loved one who has passed away, it is essential to be aware of the benefits and grief support available to veterans and their families. The U.S. government offers a range of programs and services designed to honor and assist service members and their survivors, including financial aid for funeral expenses, free bereavement counseling, and military funeral honors.

This article is designed to just get you started and give you an overview of benefits provided. Our experienced funeral home staff is fully trained on Veterans Funeral Benefits and will help you every step of the way.

First, to access military benefits, families must present the service member's military discharge papers, a copy of the veteran's death certificate, and any receipts for transporting the body. Make sure you know where that information is and have it on hand when you start planning the funeral. Careful planning and preparation will help ease the burden during this difficult time.

Most veterans qualify for a free burial in a VA national cemetery, which includes grave opening and closing, a burial liner, a headstone or grave marker, and perpetual care. However, reservations for a VA national cemetery plot cannot be made in advance.

Plus, the VA can provide a headstone or grave marker for veterans buried in private cemeteries at no cost. Alternatively, a free bronze medallion can be requested to affix to a privately purchased headstone or marker.

When it comes to the memorial service, veterans who were not dishonorably discharged are entitled to complimentary military funeral honors. This ceremony includes draping the American flag over the casket or urn, playing Taps, and presenting the folded flag to the next of kin. Funeral directors can assist with arranging this ceremony upon request.

As for funeral expenses, the VA may offer an allowance to help cover burial, plot, and funeral costs for eligible veterans. The amount received depends on factors such as whether the death was service-related and if the deceased received VA hospitalization. There are also various other programs that help cover expenses not included in military benefits.

And if you ever find that you are in need of a grief support group, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides free bereavement counseling to families who have lost a loved one during active military service. Additional grief support resources can be found through nonprofit organizations like the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS).

By understanding and taking advantage of the benefits and support available to veterans and their families, you can ensure that a military funeral is a fitting tribute to the life and service of the deceased.
