Tinnitus is a ringing sound or other noises in one or both ears. Other people typically can’t hear the noise and tinnitus isn’t caused by any other external sound. Tinnitus is fairly common and affects people more as they age. It can also be the result of an ear injury or problem with the circulatory system. In some cases, there may be no known cause. However, there are some things you can do to help prevent tinnitus and treatment is available in most cases.

Potential causes of tinnitus

Here are some of the common causes of tinnitus:

  • Age-related hearing loss - The tiny hair cells in your inner ear move when sound waves hit them. This movement is what your brain interprets as sound. If these hairs are bent or broken, which can happen as we age, they can send incorrect information to your brain.
  • Noise-related hearing loss - loud noises can also cause those tiny hair cells to bend or break, resulting in incorrect sound information being sent to your brain.
  • Ear infections or ear canal blockages - if your ear canals become blocked with earwax or dirt, this can cause a change in pressure in your ears. This can also result in tinnitus.
  • Head and neck injuries - these injuries can affect the inner ear or hearing nerves, which can lead to tinnitus.

Possible tips for avoiding or managing tinnitus

While it is impossible to eliminate all potential causes of the development of tinnitus - we can’t stop aging after all - you can take some steps to lessen your risk.

If you have tinnitus, there are many different types of treatments options available. You should speak to a doctor to determine which is best for you.

  • Avoid loud noises. If you regularly work around loud machinery or in a noisy environment, wear earplugs. If you listen to music and use headphones, make sure not to turn the music up too loud.
  • Exercise regularly. This can improve circulation. Poor circulation is one possible cause of tinnitus, so regular exercise can help.
  • Take care of yourself. Get plenty of rest and take steps to reduce your stress.
  • If you suffer from hearing loss, try hearing aids. Hearing aids make sounds clearer and louder, which can help mask tinnitus. People with other forms of hearing loss may benefit from ear surgery.
  • Limit alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine. These substances can affect your blood flow, which can contribute to tinnitus.
  • See a doctor regularly. Make sure to get checkups. If you have an ear infection or blockage in your ear, make sure to see a specialist.
